The opening ceremony of a new youth center “House of Hope” took place in a small village called Al-Azaria in Palestine on Dec. 7. KnK operates the youth center in partnership with a local NGO. Approximately 200 people attended our opening ceremony on a sunny beautiful day. Mr. Hashimoto, Representative of Japan to the Palestinian Authority, Mr. Far’on, Mayor of Bethany, Mr. Vosgueritchian, Chair of VACA, a local partner organization, and Mr. Dominique Leguillier, Executive Director of KnK addressed congratulatory speeches respectively.
During the ceremony, there were some performances such as children’s choir, traditional dance by teenage boys, stand-up comedy, and poetry reading which is a tradition in the Arabic countries. The attendees were all fascinated and applauded in a stand-up ovation.
This project, funded through the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the very first project in the area of education in Palestine by a Japanese NGO utilizing the funds. At House of Hope, we will offer to the youth aged between 6 and 22 years, vocational training such as computer and secretary skills, non-formal education including English, Arabic, Math, and workshops in art such as traditional music and dance, and theater.
This center is located just near the separation walls from Israeli. The walls give negative psychological impacts on the youth living in this region. This center is for urging sound development of the youth in difficult situations in Palestine. We will report on various activities and events at the center in the near future.
